Newspaper cutting: Bye Bye Bolan! Bowie’s taken your place

A reader’s letter seen in the Record Mirror music newspaper August 19 1972.

I’ve just bought David Bowie’s album “Ziggy Stardust” and after playing it just once, I have to play it again and again because I couldn’t believe the beautiful sounds which I’d heard were really real.

Up thill then, I though I was an unconvertible Marc Bolan fan. But to my surprise Marc’s voice did nothing to me now as it did before I’d heard David singing. Though I could never hate Marc, as he is lovely.

He’ll be remembered for the incredibly beautiful and moving songs which come from his head

The songs David writes are really beautiful. They really mean something, whereas Marc’s do not. I think if any singer-writer of today is to be remembered in the years after he has faded from the music scene, as the Beatles have been, then it must surely be David. He’ll be remembered for the incredibly beautiful and moving songs which come from his head.

And much as I love Marc Bolan. I think he’ll be remembered for bringing back the screamers to the scene after a dull period… not for his songs.

As for David, well… every time I listen to “Five Years“, “Soul Love” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide” I bawl my eyes out. The songs are so beautiful.
